PVC or Cedar? Choosing the Right Material for Rotted Exterior Trim

PVC is often an excellent choice for replacing rotted exterior trim, but it is not automatically the best material for every location. The construction of the house—and the availability of solid anchoring points—must also be considered.

PVC does not rot, but it can expand, contract, and warp when it cannot be securely fastened along its length. On some homes, especially in areas where the framing provides limited anchor points, fully primed cedar may produce a straighter and more stable repair.

When we use cedar, we prime the back, face, edges, and cut ends before installation. This helps protect the entire board from moisture rather than coating only the visible surface.

At Henderson Custom Painting LLC, we use both PVC and cedar, depending on what is best for the specific house. If we find warped PVC trim that lacks sufficient anchor points, we replace it with properly prepared and fully primed cedar. The goal is not simply to use the newest material—it is to make the most durable repair for the way the home was built.
