Why Traditional Crack Repairs Fail — And What We Do Differently
Settlement cracks are a common issue in both drywall and plaster homes. Unfortunately, the standard repair method used throughout much of the painting industry often provides only a temporary solution. In many cases, contractors simply tape over the crack, apply joint compound or spackle, sand the area smooth, and repaint. While this may look good initially, the crack often returns as the home continues to experience normal movement and settling.
At Henderson Custom Painting LLC, we take a different approach.
Rather than covering the damaged area, we remove the failed crack by carefully opening and cleaning it out. The crack is then backfilled with a specialized flexible epoxy compound designed to move with the wall or ceiling. This material remains slightly flexible after curing, allowing it to absorb minor structural movement that would typically cause traditional repairs to fail.
The epoxy compound we use is significantly stronger than the surrounding drywall or plaster itself. By creating a reinforced repair that yields with movement rather than resisting it, we are able to achieve a much more durable and long-lasting result.
This repair method is particularly effective for recurring settlement cracks found above doors and windows, at ceiling transitions, along stairways, and in older plaster homes where seasonal movement is common.
While no crack repair can be guaranteed never to reappear if substantial structural movement continues, our flexible epoxy repair system has consistently proven to be far more durable than conventional tape-and-spackle repairs.
