Window Restoration: Bringing Old Wood Windows Back to Life (Without Replacement)
Why Restore Instead of Replace?
If your home has original wood windows, replacement is often presented as the only solution—but in many cases, restoration is the better investment.
Restoring your existing windows allows you to:
- Preserve the original craftsmanship and character of your home
- Avoid the high cost of full window replacement
- Extend the life of your windows by decades
- Maintain the proper fit and function of old-growth wood
Many “failing” windows simply need proper glazing, sealing, and painting—not replacement.
Our Window Restoration Process
At Henderson Custom Painting LLC, we follow a careful, multi-step approach designed to protect the glass, stabilize the wood, and ensure long-term durability.
Phase 1: Preparation, Priming & Glazing
We begin with detailed preparation:
- Scrape and sand all loose and peeling paint
- Remove deteriorated or failed glazing putty
Once prepped, we restore and protect the wood:
- Saturate exposed wood fibers with boiled linseed oil to improve adhesion and longevity
- Apply a slow-drying alkyd primer to all bare wood and areas receiving new glazing
- Where appropriate, apply a bonding primer (such as Peel Bond) to unify previously painted surfaces
Next, we address the glazing:
- Spot glaze all areas where putty has failed or been removed
- Re-establish a tight seal between the glass and sash
Important Note:
Some existing putty and paint may remain if removal risks damaging the glass. This is intentional and part of a careful restoration approach.
Glazing putty requires proper curing time, which typically takes several weeks depending on temperature and humidity.
Phase 2: Finish Painting
After the glazing has fully cured, we return to complete the process:
- Apply two finish coats of Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex
- Use a satin finish (commonly Extra White) for a clean, durable result
- Ensure full, even coverage across all restored surfaces
Common Window Issues We Repair
Homeowners often contact us when they notice:
- Cracked, brittle, or missing glazing putty
- Peeling or failing paint
- Drafts around window panes
- Weathered or exposed wood
- Loose or shifting glass
These are typically restoration issues—not signs that windows need to be replaced.
Why the Two-Phase Process Matters
Window restoration cannot be rushed.
Proper curing time between glazing and painting is critical. Skipping this step often leads to premature paint failure and reduced lifespan.
By completing the project in two phases, we ensure:
- Strong adhesion
- Long-term durability
- A professional, lasting finish
